CO-ED KICKBALL RULES
While our basic premise is for everyone to have fun…we still have to have rules. Please review the rules below. If you have any questions, your field refs will be happy to answer them.
Any team knowing in advance that they will be unable to play in a scheduled match may request to cancel and take a loss. All cancellation requests must be completed prior to 12:00pm the day of the game, or Friday for Sunday games. The GSSS Office must be contacted when canceling a game.
A team must report to the game site and be “ready to play” with the minimum number of players to avoid a forfeit. “Ready to play” means checked in with the proper game equipment and on the field/court ready to begin play at the scheduled game time. For every 5 minutes a team is delayed, the opposing team will be awarded one (1) run. It is advised that teams show up 15 minutes prior to their scheduled start time. The GSSS Staff will be responsible for calling a forfeit
Rule interpretation and player eligibility protests must be declared immediately after the play in question. Rulings involving official’s judgment may NOT be protested.
All participants are expected to play according to the rules and policies set for by GSSS. Please review the “League Info” page on the website regarding player conduct.
During league play and/or playoff games, a game “under play” may be called due to inclement weather or mechanical failure of the lights. Situations that would warrant calling games due to inclement weather would be lightning and thunder, tornado warnings and conditions that would be deemed injurious to participants continued play. The GSSS Supervisor will have the responsibility for calling games due to inclement weather or light failure. Games that are called prior to starting by the supervisor will be re-scheduled (if time permits) by the GSSS Staff.
In the event of inclement weather during the regular season, if a game has five (5) innings, it is over and the score is official. If the game has not yet completed five (5) innings, it is considered a cancelled game and will not be counted toward playoff qualification. Canceled games will only be made up if space and time permits.
A participant may be on the official roster for only one team. They may play on two teams if one of the teams is a Co-ed team.

Each player must wear athletic shoes. They must be made of soft, pliable upper material (molded plastic, canvas, leather, or synthetic) that covers the foot attached to a composition bottom. Shoes with rubber cleats are acceptable; however, NO METAL may be exposed on cleats. Screw-in cleats are allowed as long as the screw is part of the cleat.
All games shall be played on field diamond sized for softball. Fields with or without outfield fences are acceptable.
Bases will be approximately 60 feet apart
The pitching strip will be 42 feet from the front of home plate and directly between first and third bases.
The strike zone is one (1) foot wide on either side of home plate and one (1) foot high.
A safety base will be utilized for first base only.
The kicker’s box extends 10 feet back from each foul line and is aligned with the top of home plate. The ball must be kicked from within the kicker’s box.
Any ball that touches a referee or player who is in any part of fair territory will be considered in fair territory and in play.
The official kickball is a 10-inch rubber ball that is inflated to 1.5 pounds per square inch.
Each game will be officiated by at least one head referee. The referee shall position him or herself behind the pitcher or behind the catcher and is responsible for all calls made on the field. If there are two referees, one referee will be positioned behind home plate and the other will be positioned at second base. The head referee will have the final say in all rulings.
An official may call any time out at his/her discretion during the game. The official may also delay a game for considerable reasons such as weather (observed lightning will always delay/cancel a game) or darkness. The official may stop and/or cancel a game in progress due to weather, darkness or any unsportsmanlike conduct including fighting, verbal abuse and/or property destruction.
A team may have a maximum of 14 players on its roster. Teams shall field 10 players (at least 4 women). A team may play with a minimum of 7 players. No more than 6 males may be on the field at one time. A minimum of 2 females must be on the field. If a team does not have the minimum number of players required within five minutes after the official start time of the game, the game will be considered a forfeit. With the permission of the opposing team, a team that cannot field enough players may choose to use a substitute player from another team that is not actively playing. Substitutes may not be used during playoff games.
Each team must designate at least one captain and one co-captain. The captain or co-captain is the only player allowed to appeal a decision or call made by an official. If an appeal is made, the league will make a final ruling regarding the appeal within one week.
Each player on the team must appear in the batting order regardless of playing the field or not. The batting order may not be changed once the game begins. If a player arrives to a game late, that player must be added to the end of the batting order. If a team bats out of order, the batter who is out of order will be considered out. A captain or co-captain may question or appeal another team’s batting order at any time. When the roster permits, there must be at least four (4) women within the first ten (10) batters of the line-up. Batters may appear in any order and do not have to alternate between males and females.
Any number of pitchers may be used during the game. A pitcher may not be substituted during an active at bat.
A regulation game lasts seven (7) full innings or 45 minutes (whichever comes first).
In the event that a game is ended earlier by an official’s discretion, 5 innings will be a regulation game.
A game that is ended before 5 full innings will be rescheduled (when space and time permits) and will be a continuation of the ended game.
All fielders must start each play and remain behind the 1st-3rd base diagonal until the ball is kicked. The catcher starts behind the plate, inside or outside of the kicker’s box. The catcher may not cross home before the ball is kicked. Outfielders may never cross into the infield. If an outfielder is deemed to have crossed into the infield, all runners will be awarded the base to which they are closest.
All balls must be pitched underhand such that when the ball is released the greater part of the pitcher’s hand is under the ball.
The pitcher must start pitching within the mound area. The ball must be released while the pitcher has at least one foot on or directly behind the pitching rubber. The pitcher may not cross the pitching rubber until the ball is kicked.
A count of three (3) strikes is an out.
Foul balls count as strikes except when the strike would result in a third strike.
Four foul balls result in an out.
Balls must bounce at least twice and/or roll through the strike zone to be considered a strike.
Four balls is a walk.
Three outs per inning for each team.
Basic baseball rules apply regarding tagging runners with the ball and the ball reaching the base on force-outs before the runner. Runners may also be hit with the ball, while running the bases, by the opposing team to gain an out. Balls must ht the runner below the shoulder. Any ball aimed at a runner’s head will be an automatic ejection of the thrower.
A ball may only be kicked by foot or leg (below the knee).
Kicks can only occur behind or at home plate. If a batter crosses ahead of home plate to kick the ball, the kick is a foul ball.
The kicker must have at least one whole foot within the kicking box when the ball is kicked (all else is considered a foul ball).
A kicker may bunt the ball. Only two bunts are allowed per inning per team. A bunt occurs when the batter is deemed to not deliver a full kick to the ball. Bunts are ruled at the discretion and judgment of the official.
Base runners cannot leave the bag until contact has been made with the ball. If a runner is off the base when a ball is kicked, the runner is out.
All base runners must stay within the baseline.
All plays end when the pitcher has control of the ball and returns to the pitching rubber. Runners who are not advancing to another base must return to the previous base. Runners who are advancing to the next base, may claim that base.
A team is allowed a maximum of 10 runs per inning. Once a team scores 10 runs in one inning, the half-inning will end. The 10-run rule does not apply to the last inning.
